D-2 Inc. will be presenting our New CTD Technology at the Blue Innovation Symposium 2025
D-2 Sponsoring Blue Innovation Symposium
D-2 Inc. is proud to be sponsoring the Blue Innovation Symposium 2025 event. During this event D-2 Inc. will be presenting our brand new CTD technology developments during a 5 min flash talk. We will also have an exhibition booth display set up to show off our latest new CTD cell design. Our plan in going to the Blue Innovation Symposium is to showcase our new CTD technology to the Oceanographic Industry and t the new Blue Technology companies that are up and coming n the industry. CTD’s being a backbone instrument for the entire field of Oceanography can be utilized by many of the ROVs, USV’s, AUV’s, XLAUV’s and more. Our CTD’s being compatible with OEM designs can be incorporated into many already existing platforms seamlessly.
Why is the D-2 CTD a novel new design for measuring conductivity aka salinity of Ocean water?
The Oceanographic Community for the past 40+ years has been using one of two types of technology to measure the salinity of the Ocean: mainly the SBE three electrode cell or the open field inductive conductivity sensors made by many companies but in the modern day 2025 dominated by RBR’s inductive cell. Both of these types of CTD’s have their advantages and their disadvantages. The three electrode cell for example is far more accurate however it is far larger and requires a pump to operate. The inductive cell is far less accurate than the three electrode cell and requires calibration of anything within it’s field range, but it is much smaller and can be designed to use the natural water flow to measure.
What did we do differently? We took these two type of measurement and combined them into a new “hybrid” CTD cell that gains the benefits of both and eliminates the negatives of both. Our sensor is closed field thus delivering the accuracy of the three electrode cell however ours utilizes inductive technology. Instead of a third electrode which allows our cell to be much wider and shorter thus free flowing like an inductive cell. Delivering the best of both worlds without compromising. Now you can have a small OEM free flowing CTD but also have a closed field precision CTD that shows up calibrated and ready to install on any platform without any further calibration.
Can you see the difference? The above is our new CTD cell, as you can see directly through the center our cell is much wider and shorter than the typical closed field cell. This allows the cell to be free flowing which was proven with tank data from Clark Lab at WHOI Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This means you can strap this cell to any platform and so far as there is some flow going through the cell. Our CTD can deliver closed field precision accuracy 0.0003 S/m.
